Ceiling Tiles: A Guide to Your Ceiling Options

The ceiling of a room can often be overlooked, but it plays an important role in both the aesthetic and functional design of a space. Ceiling tiles come in a variety of materials, colours, and textures, and offer numerous benefits for both residential and commercial buildings. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at the different types of ceiling tiles available and the factors you should consider when selecting the right tiles for your space.

Materials:

  • - Mineral Fiber Tiles: These tiles are made of natural materials like rock wool or fiberglass and are a popular choice for residential and commercial applications. They are moisture and mold resistant, fire-resistant, and offer good acoustical performance. The most well known mineral fibre tiles brand are Zentia, Rockfon, Knauf Ceiling Solutions & Ecophon.
  • - Metal Tiles: Metal tiles are often made of aluminum or steel and are a good choice for high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms. They are durable, water-resistant, and offer good fire resistance.
  • - Wood Tiles: Wood tiles are made from natural or engineered wood and are a popular choice for residential applications. They offer a warm, natural look, but can be more expensive and less durable than other options.
  • - Plasterboard Tiles: These tiles are made of gypsum and are a popular choice for residential and commercial applications. They offer good fire resistance, acoustical performance, and can be painted or textured to match your decor. Some popular brands include TVS Cleancare and British Gypsum Satin Spar.

Design and Aesthetic:

When choosing ceiling tiles, it's important to consider the design and aesthetic of your space. Ceiling tiles come in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns, and can be used to create a variety of different looks. Consider the overall style of your room and choose tiles that complement it. You are not just limited to ceiling tiles, when looking at the design of your room. Many of the major ceiling brands also offer such things as baffles and acoustic wall panels.

Functionality:

Ceiling tiles also play an important role in the functionality of a space. Consider the type of space you are working with and choose tiles that offer the benefits you need. For example, if you are working with a space with a high moisture content, consider metal tiles. If acoustics are important, consider tiles made of mineral fiber or plasterboard.

Fire Resistance:

When selecting ceiling tiles, it's important to consider the fire resistance requirements of your building. Most countries have fire safety regulations that set minimum standards for fire resistance and smoke control. Choose tiles that meet the fire resistance requirements specified in the regulations.

It is a miss conception that a tile on its own is fire rated. Many ceiling tiles do hold a fire rating, but the fire rating only stands when the requirements from the test certificate are met. For example, Zentia may say that their MezzGuard ceiling tile is fire rated, but on the test certificate, it will outline exactly how you achieve that rating. This would generally include the below :-

  • - Installing with the matching Zentia grid system
  • - Installing main runners at certain centres, such as every 600mm
  • - Clipping the tiles down
  • - Installing under specific surfaces only i.e. concrete, steel, timber or mezzanine
